MUSKEGON — Attention biofuels, dairy, ice cream producers, cheese manufacturers and prepared salad companies. Muskegon County has land available for you.
Muskegon County has contracted with Muskegon Area First to market 700 acres in the former wastewater treatment site in Whitehall and 1,500 acres in the county’s Business Park East, according to Muskegon Area First President Jim Edmunson.
“Because of the reduced flow of wastewater from Sappi, we’re trying to use the available land at the current wastewater facility,” Edmunson told MiBiz. The county wants to use those properties to attract larger users of wastewater, most likely industrial companies from out of Michigan. New users “save money for all residences and businesses in Muskegon County.” Muskegon Area First has identified companies from across the U.S. that they would like to attract.
“Our growing population has increased demand on the food side. And we have the land and wastewater treatment system that can support them. With biofuels — that’s the new thing as we try to become less dependent on crude oil,” Edmunson said.
