The Muskegon Chronicle
Three local teams, including two from Reeths-Puffer schools,
earned the right to go to the "global finals" of the Destination
ImagiNation competition.
This is the second year in a row that Ravenna Middle School is going
to the global finals, which will be next month in Knoxville, Tenn.
Reeths-Puffer Middle School and Reeths-Puffer Elementary also will
attend the finals.
Twenty-one local teams were among more than 300 that competed at
the state tournament Saturday at Central Michigan University.
In most cases, the top two teams in each category won the chance
to advance to the finals.
During Destination ImagiNation, teams of usually seven students
compete in various problem-solving categories. They compete in such
challenges as designing structures out of wood and glue, performing
musical skits, telling stories and creating cartoon characters.
Teams compete at elementary, middle and high school levels.
Reeths-Puffer Elementary placed first in the "Cartoon DImensions"
category, which required them to create an original cartoon story
complete with characters, costumes and sound effects.
Reeths-Puffer Middle School placed first in "GuessDImate!,"
in which they built a structure of wood and glue and then had to
guess how many pounds of weight it could hold.
Ravenna Middle School placed first in "DestiNations in Time,"
which required the team to build its own timing device, perform
certain tasks and tell an international story about what would happen
if the team was in charge of time.
Ravenna Middle School was the only local school to attend the Destination
ImagiNation global finals last year.
