News of the local economy last week contained two real nuggets with the announcement of expansions at Howmet Alcoa Castings in Whitehall and Johnson Technology Inc. in Muskegon.

A combined total of 75 new jobs are expected to be created in the high pay, great benefits industrial work force. The news comes as a real boost in light of the overall suffering of Michigan's regional economy.

The Whitehall City Council is already on board with Howmet's request to add additional casting equipment at three plants which produce precision parts for the aerospace industry.

In all, the parent company is pumping some $23 million into the new plants and adding 50 jobs. Johnson Technology, another stalwart of the Greater Muskegon economy will add 25 jobs after putting $5.58 million into ints 2024 Latimer plant, now undergoing "substantial upgrades," according to President David Yacavone.

It's very encouraging to see this kind of solid investment being made in our community.
